Q: What are the key ingredients to balancing a busy work day with self-care?
A: I think that you need to be comfortable with saying, “no,” to things sometimes. This industry can get really crazy, my inbox is constantly filling up with invitations, and it took me a really long time to learn to prioritize my own mental health and well being. Sometimes I just need to take a second, or an entire day, to roll it back, calm it down, recenter myself, and just relax a little bit.
Q: What is your favorite part of every day travel in New York?
A: My favorite part is almost my least favorite part about traveling in New York. Public transportation’s really easy, but it’s usually very crowded. I try not to get too frustrated because I grew up having to drive really far distances, and I love that you can zone out on the train, pop in your headphones, listen to music, play a podcast, not really pay attention, and just get to where you need to go.
Q: What are the social topics you are most passionate about and why?
A: I’d have to say the social topics I care about most, for right now, would be all of the controversy surrounding a woman’s right to choose what to do with her body and all of the laws surrounding abortion access in specific states. My home state of Missouri has passed legislation that’s making it a lot more difficult for women to access the care that they have every right to receive. That’s something I try really hard not to tune out, as much as I want to, I need to pay attention to what’s happening politically and culturally.
I’m also trying to be very conscious of what I’m consuming and how it affects the environment, so I’m on a no-straw movement. I’m just trying to be conscious of recycling, not returning things online, and just being a conscious consumer as much as possible.
Q: What is the best part about having the Instagram platform to share things with your followers?
A: The best part about Instagram is that you’re able to share pieces of your life that you’re really excited about. If I’m traveling somewhere fun, or discovering a new brand, or meeting a new person doing really cool projects, I’m able to relay that to my audience. I try to give people a peek into what my life is like on the daily. I try to treat my grid as a place where I express my love of fashion and I follow a lot of other people whose style I admire. And then my stories are a snapshot into my daily life.
Q: What is your personal mantra?
A: My personal mantra has been with me since I was in college. It’s, “Work hard and be nice to people.”
I think that can apply to every area of your life and especially in the industry I am in, you can get really far by putting in the effort and treating others the way you want to be treated.
