DESTINATION: Tanzania W/ Jill Paider
Tanzania is the epicenter for safaris on the African continent. The country is covered with national parks, one more beautiful than the next, paired with amazing hospitality and a beautiful culture that’s incredibly welcoming to foreigners. Whether you’re there to climb Kilimanjaro or take a luxury safari or self-guided tour, you will find Tanzania to be a gem within East Africa.
I went to complete shooting for my book, African Safari.
Food & Wine
Tanzania offers great traditional dishes (a lot of which are meat, fish and/or rice-based and have similarities to Indian cuisine). Safari goers will find that lodges and outfitters cater very well to dietary restrictions and preferences. Tanzania does produce its own wine and local beer. You will also find great South African varietals in the region.
Getting There & Away: One-stop connecting flights to Dar es Salaam are available from several major US cities.
Budgeting Tips: While Africa tends to be a little harder to budget for, there are airfare deals and specials on accommodations to be had. Consider using a ticket broker for your air ticket.
Packing Considerations: Safari attire with special consideration to color (you don’t want to attract bugs!) is all you’ll need clothing-wise. The majority of lodges offer laundry services. If you are taking small aircrafts between lodges, you’ll want to doublecheck your luggage max weight. It’s usually 10 kg.
Good To Know: The roads in Tanzania can be pretty rough. If you are prone to motion sickness, stock your bags with Dramamine.
