DESTINATION: Fiji W/ Jill Paider
An incredible archipelago, Fiji is a destination you’ve probably seen a thousand times—and it’s even better in person. Endless islands, untouched beaches, amazing coral reef and sea life coupled with warm hospitality make this the ultimate island getaway. Fiji has depth and breadth like no other country. It is a five-star gem in the South Pacific and a "must do" on most travelers’ lists for a reason.
Fiji had been on my bucket list for a very long time and I used a big birthday as the excuse to go. I photographed several resorts for my book, Modern Refuge.
Food & Wine
The strong influence of Indo-Fijian culture means the cuisine has wonderful curries and spices in it. Travelers will find a mix of traditional Fijian dishes like kokoada (a ceviche-like dish), lovo, taro, nama and kava—along with a variety of international culinary options. Lovers of seafood and Indian cuisine will be in heaven.
Getting There & Away: Direct flights to Nadi from Los Angeles.
Budgeting Tips: Flight prices to Fiji remain pretty static, but there are deals to be had on accommodations. If you watch booking sites and book far enough in advance you can get more reasonable fares.
Packing Considerations: Casual attire will suit for most venues and activities. If you have gear that you like to take with you for diving, snorkeling, hiking, surfing, etc. – bring it along.
Good To Know: Some resorts are located in remote parts of the island where you do need transportation, as there are no provisions in walking distance.
