DESTINATION: Dominican Republic W/ Jill Paider
The Dominican Republic is one of the true gems of the Caribbean. Cabarete, a small town on the north coast, which happens to be the kiteboarding capital of the world, is the destination of interest here. Pristine beaches, friendly expats and locals, and a super-relaxed lifestyle are what this location is all about.
A family wedding originally brought me to the DR. My sister now lives here, so I have the inside pass on the north coast. It is an intoxicating place that will keep you coming back for more – that is, if you ever decide to return home.
Food & Wine
While not a culinary capital in its own right, the DR does have great local dishes, fresh fish, as well as international-inspired dining options. Rum and Mamajuana are the drinks of choice here. Happy hours run three times per day.
Getting There & Away: Direct flights to Puerto Plata from Miami, New York, Toronto & Montreal.
Budgeting Tips: The majority of rental properties on the north coast are listed on Airbnb. This is where you are likely to find the best deals on accommodations. Once you are here, food and beverage costs are exceptionally reasonable, making this a very budget-friendly destination.
Packing Considerations: The DR could be one of the easiest places on earth to pack for. All you need is beachwear: a swimsuit, flip-flops and a beach cover-up. Casual clothes will get you in almost everywhere (aside from fine-dining establishments in the capital, Santo Domingo.)
Good To Know: Car rental is not necessary or recommended. Roads within the country are fairly rough, so going any distance takes considerably longer than you’d anticipate. In the beach cities you will find plenty of taxis and motoconchos (motorcycle taxis).
