DESTINATION: Chile & The Atacama Desert W/ Jill Paider
The Atacama Desert is one of the most beautiful deserts in the world, and it’s exceptionally travel-friendly. It spans nearly 1,600 km along the northern coast of Chile and offers adventure travelers the trip of a lifetime. It is a stargazing haven and a great respite from city living.
I love the desert and adventure holidays. The Atacama was a dream come true with its stunning vistas, beautiful terrain for hiking and biking, and friendly locals with great hospitality. While I was here I photographed several luxury accommodations for my books: Modern Refuge and Design + Destination.
Food & Wine
Being a small tourist city in the desert, the food is not a highlight per se of a trip here. However, excellent Chilean wines are available and there are certainly great meals to be had both in the town of San Pedro and the higher-end accommodations.
Getting There & Away: Direct flights to Santiago from a number of major U.S. Cities. From Santiago, it’s a two-hour flight north to Calama.
Budgeting Tips: This region hosts everything from hostel accommodations to Relais & Châteaux hotels, accommodating all budgets.
Packing Considerations: Like most desert environments, the temperature in the Atacama can vary drastically within a day. It’s best to bring layers and plan for weather even cooler than you can imagine. San Pedro de Atacama is very casual. Trekking and active gear is all you need here.
Good To Know: San Pedro de Atacama is at altitude, so if you are prone to altitude sickness you may want to pack accordingly and plan for a day to acclimate.
