#TRENDING: This Summer’s Staples

#TRENDING: This Summer’s Staples

Before we head into the flurry that is Fashion Week, let’s review what’s trending at this very moment. And because we’re nearing the last chance to shop this Summer, we’re covering all things clothing, styling, accessories, and beauty.

I used to have a hard time remembering that this was spelled, “ruffLE” and not “ruffEL.” The only way I could remember how to spell it was if I said “Rufflé” in my head, and I finally get to tell someone this because it’s a major trend. Designers like Molly Goddard, Giambattista Valli, and Pierpaolo Piccioli (of Valentino) are paving the way for these over-the-top ruffled gowns, and it’s FINALLY hitting the mass market.

The Princess Diana Factor

We’ve been circling the 80’s and 90’s for a couple years now, but it wasn’t until recently that we found someone with actual taste to look up to. Princess Diana was a pioneer of so many things, but ultimately she was a fashion and grace icon. The biker shorts, the high waisted denim, the matching pant suits, and the subtle gold jewelry (on a woman with ACTUAL CROWN JEWELS at her disposal) is remarkable and very trendy.

Homemade Tie Dye

I don’t know how I feel about this just yet. Like… I can’t tell you how long this trend will last. Tie-Dye prints are risky because when it comes back in style, it comes back hard. It has this weird pattern of being hot, hot, hot, and then never, ever, ever again. There’s no middle ground where you can throw on your homemade tie-dye tee for your trip to the coffee shop around the corner once it’s out of style. Maybe just admire this trend from afar…

Masculinity and utility are two trends that will fall in line later this summer/early this fall. But for now, women are dipping their toes in the masculine sea and switching their heels for loafers. These are what I like to call, “Boss B*tch Shoes.” Paired with a mini-skirt or high waisted denim, they’re the perfect way to say you mean business. Note: If the loafers feel really boring or if they age your look by 20+ years, try adding a decorative sock.

Chunky Belts

If you have a dress that’s just a tiny bit too long, try a waist belt. If you have a dress that’s just a tiny bit too potato-sack-y, try a waist belt. Basically, if your clothing doesn’t quite fit right, try adding a waist belt to complete the outfit and accentuate your waist. I used to suggest a thin, brown belt with delicate braiding, but lately it’s been all about a wider band with a bigger buckle.

Laced and Loaded

I don’t even know what to say about this. Raise your hand if you know what’s going on here!!! It’s like the first person to try this was just having a really rough morning and they were too lazy to pull the hem of their trousers out from under their straps? They got all the way to work and someone else was like, “OMG. You’ve cracked it.” IS THAT HOW IT HAPPENED FASHION GODS???!?

Becoming Blair Waldorf

I have officially found a new way to disguise my disgustingly greasy hair on Saturday mornings. I’d like to think that these oversized headbands are pulling my hair out of my eyes and letting strangers get a good look at my skin instead. Plus, by making a conscious decision to accessorize, it looks like I’ve got everything under control and I totally showered yesterday.

For this trend in particular, I’ve been so inspired by @lottaliinalove. See the mastery below.

Fishnets for Bags

I have to be completely honest with all of you… I have tried bags like these and they are completely useless. WHO CARES THO BECAUSE YOU CAN PUT OTHER BAGS INSIDE THIS BAG. For weeks I’ve been walking around with my Travel Wallet inside this yellow, netted bag I got as a gift with purchase and I’m obsessed. Every day feels like a day at the farmer’s market.

Metal Straws

Books like The Uninhabitable Earth have recently scared the living poo out of me, so I’m trying to be more proactive about my everyday purchases. Here’s one trending item that will do us all some good.

You can purchase this metal straw set here. It comes with 8 straws, 2 cleaners (which are very important so do not lose them), and a simple carry-ing case.

If your friends think it’s overkill or if they make fun of you for it, just remind yourself that you’re not doing it for them. You’re doing it for the turtles.

Multi-colored Nails

Have you ever gone to a nail salon and been completely overwhelmed by the color options? What about when you’ve chosen your color and you go to sit down and think, “Oh god, what have I done? WHAT IS THIS COLOR?” Well, have no fear because it’s totally chill to have five different colors for your five different fingers.

Your Mom’s Eyeshadow

Okay, maybe that’s not the right title for this but it’s pretty dang close. Major beauty companies like Colourpop Cosmetics, Glossier, MAC, and NYX are bringing eyeshadow back! I remember my mom having these 4-color, Chanel compacts in her drawer that came with instructions and a small applicator. She literally had no use for any other makeup but eyeshadow and now when I look at my cosmetics, I. am. shook. It’s all about the palette, baby.

Middle Part, Low Bun.

I used to think this was only for ballerinas, but now I’m jealous that I didn’t catch on sooner. Just a little Ouai Rose Hair & Body Oil, a heavy bristle brush, and a sturdy pony tail and you’ve got the easiest hairdo in the world. This is what I call my, “I was running late, but I happen to look chic af,” hair.

Whatever you do this Summer, do it for you. Whether you’re intimidated by new trends or totally ready for them, just do what feels right. There will always be that thought in the back of your mind that says, “Is this too much?” You’ll never know if you never try. It’s important to remember that we’re all trying together.
